Technical Scaffolding Support — Kent & South East

Scaffolding Design, Technical Layouts & Pre-Construction Compliance

Not every scaffolding project is straightforward.

Complex buildings, unusual access requirements, temporary roofs, cantilever arrangements, public protection, restricted sites and larger commercial projects can require additional technical planning before scaffolding is erected.

All Scaffolding Services Kent Ltd provides experienced scaffolding planning and technical coordination for projects across Kent and the South East.

Where a project requires specialist structural calculations, bespoke engineering or technical design beyond our direct scope, we can coordinate with appropriately qualified external specialists to help ensure the required information is available before work begins.

Engineering & Technical Design Support

We can help clients, contractors, builders and developers identify the technical requirements of a scaffolding project at the pre-construction stage — before commitments are made and before work begins on site.

Initial Access Assessment

Review of access requirements, scaffold configuration options and site constraints at the earliest stage of project planning.

Technical Coordination

Coordination of the technical information required for the project, including liaison with structural engineers and other specialists where appropriate.

Scaffold Configuration Planning

Identification of the appropriate scaffold arrangement, access routes and working platform requirements for the project.

Complex & Non-Standard Scaffolding

Assessment of projects that fall outside standard configurations, including unusual dimensions, loading requirements or site conditions.

Temporary Roof Requirements

Review of temporary roof requirements, including configuration, loading and the technical information needed before erection.

Cantilever & Suspended Access

Identification of cantilever and suspended access requirements where site conditions or building configuration make standard scaffolding impractical.

Public Protection & Gantries

Planning of public protection measures, pedestrian gantries and hoarding arrangements where required by the project or the local authority.

Restricted-Access Sites

Assessment of access constraints, including narrow streets, occupied premises, listed buildings and sites with limited working space.

Complex & Specialist Scaffolding

Larger or unusual projects often require additional planning and coordination before scaffolding can be erected. The nature and extent of that planning depends on the project — not every complex project requires bespoke engineering, but some do.

Where required, we can coordinate with appropriately qualified specialists to provide the necessary technical calculations or engineering input.

  • Temporary roof systems
  • Complex access scaffolds
  • Cantilever scaffolds
  • Suspended access arrangements
  • Public protection structures
  • Pedestrian gantries
  • Difficult or restricted access
  • Large commercial projects
  • Industrial projects
  • Heritage and unusual buildings
  • Projects requiring specialist engineering input

RAMS & Pre-Construction Planning

Project-specific risk assessments and method statements are an important part of pre-construction planning for scaffolding work. The appropriate content and level of detail depends on the nature of the project, the site conditions and the work being undertaken.

We prepare RAMS appropriate to the project, covering the key considerations for safe erection, use and dismantling of the scaffold.

  • Risk assessments
  • Method statements
  • Site-specific requirements
  • Access and egress arrangements
  • Public protection measures
  • Erection and dismantling sequences
  • Site restrictions and constraints
  • Interface with other contractors
  • Weather and environmental considerations
  • Inspection and handover arrangements

Scaffolding Standards & Technical Requirements

Scaffolding in the United Kingdom is designed and erected in accordance with recognised industry standards and guidance. The appropriate standard, guidance and design approach depends on the scaffold configuration, loading requirements and project conditions.

Relevant standards and guidance include TG20:21, the industry guidance document for tube-and-fitting scaffolding published by the NASC, and BS EN 12811-1, the European standard for temporary works equipment. TG20:21 provides a compliance sheet approach for standard configurations; projects outside those parameters may require a bespoke scaffold design.

Not every scaffold requires bespoke engineering design. Many projects can be addressed using standard configurations within recognised guidance. Where a project falls outside those parameters, additional design input may be required.

Structural Calculations & Specialist Engineering

Some scaffolding arrangements require specific structural calculations or specialist engineering input. When this is required, All Scaffolding Services Kent Ltd can coordinate with appropriately qualified external specialists to obtain the necessary technical information for the project.

This may apply to unusual loading, non-standard dimensions, complex configurations, temporary roof systems, cantilever arrangements, suspended access or other situations where additional technical assessment is appropriate.

We do not describe ourselves as structural engineers or specialist scaffold designers. Where that input is required, we will identify the need and coordinate with the appropriate specialist.

From Initial Enquiry to Scaffold Handover

01

Discuss the project

Talk through the project requirements, access constraints, programme and any known technical considerations.

02

Review access and site requirements

Assess dimensions, access routes, site conditions and any restrictions that affect the scaffold configuration.

03

Identify technical requirements

Determine whether the project falls within standard configurations or requires additional design, calculations or specialist input.

04

Coordinate specialist input where required

Where structural calculations or specialist engineering are needed, coordinate with appropriately qualified external specialists.

05

Prepare project-specific RAMS

Prepare risk assessments and method statements appropriate to the project and site conditions.

06

Plan the scaffold installation

Confirm the scaffold configuration, programme, access arrangements and any interface requirements with other trades.

07

Erect the scaffold

Erect the scaffold in accordance with the agreed design, RAMS and programme, with CISRS-qualified operatives throughout.

08

Handover and inspection

Why Involve Your Scaffolding Contractor Early?

Discussing scaffolding requirements before construction starts can make a significant difference to project planning, programme and cost. Early involvement allows access requirements to be identified, technical considerations to be addressed and potential problems to be resolved before they affect the programme.

Identify access requirements early

Understand the scaffold configuration, working platform requirements and access routes before other trades are committed.

Reduce surprises on site

Address access constraints, site restrictions and technical requirements before work starts, rather than discovering them during erection.

Identify specialist design requirements

Determine whether the project requires bespoke calculations or specialist engineering input, and allow time to obtain it.

Coordinate with other trades

Plan scaffold requirements alongside other trades to avoid programme conflicts and ensure access is available when needed.

Plan public protection

Identify public protection requirements early, including gantries, hoarding and highway licence requirements.

Consider temporary roof requirements

Assess whether a temporary roof is required and identify the technical information needed before erection.

Improve project planning

Provide clearer information for programme planning, tender documents and pre-construction meetings.

Clearer quotations

Provide more accurate and complete quotations when access requirements and technical considerations are understood at the outset.
