How far in advance do I need to book scaffolding for a bricklaying job?

For most domestic extensions and smaller new builds, two to three weeks notice is sufficient. For larger commercial sites or multi-unit developments we recommend contacting us as early as possible in the programme so we can plan the scaffold design and erection sequence around your build schedule.

Can you adapt the scaffold as the brickwork rises?

Yes. We expect to adapt the scaffold as the build progresses. As each lift of brickwork is completed we raise the working platform and reposition loading bays as required. You contact us when you need a change and we aim to turn it around within 24 to 48 hours on most sites.

Do you provide loading bays for brick deliveries?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Loading bays are a standard part of our bricklaying scaffold designs. We position them to allow direct access for a hoist, crane or forklift depending on the site layout. We discuss loading bay requirements during the initial site visit.

What is TG20 compliance and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

TG20 is the industry guidance document for tube and fitting scaffolding produced by the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation. Scaffolding erected to TG20 meets the structural requirements of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and is accepted by principal contractors and building control without the need for a separate structural calculation. We erect to TG20 as standard and provide bespoke SG4 designs where the structure falls outside TG20 parameters.

Yes. We are Constructionline Gold registered and SSIP accredited through Achilles. These accreditations are accepted by most principal contractors and developers as evidence of our health and safety management, insurance and financial standing. We can also provide RAMS, method statements and handover certificates as required.

The most useful information is the property address, the type of brickwork being carried out, the approximate height of the structure, whether there is restricted access, and the expected duration of the hire. For new builds and extensions, the build programme and the number of lifts required are also useful. Photographs of the property and the access routes are always helpful. Can you provide scaffolding for a bricklayer working on a garden wall or boundary wall?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Garden walls, boundary walls and retaining walls often require scaffolding for safe access, particularly where the wall is more than two metres high or where the ground on one or both sides is uneven. The scaffold for a garden wall is typically a simple independent scaffold alongside the wall, providing a working platform at the correct height for the bricklayer. Where the wall is on a boundary between two properties, we can advise on access requirements and any considerations relating to the Party Wall Act. What is the correct working height for a bricklayer's scaffold?

Accepted Answer

The working platform for bricklaying should be set so that the bricklayer is working at a comfortable height — typically with the top of the wall being built at around elbow height. As the wall rises, the scaffold needs to be raised in lifts to maintain the correct working height. Each lift is typically around 1.5 metres. We design the scaffold with the correct number of lifts for the height of the wall being built, and we can raise the scaffold as the work progresses. The scaffold must be inspected after each lift before the bricklayer returns to work.

Yes. New build extensions are one of the most common applications for bricklayer scaffolding. The scaffold needs to provide safe access to all elevations of the extension as it rises, with working platforms at each lift height and edge protection throughout. Where the extension is being built against an existing house, the scaffold also needs to provide access to the junction between the new and existing structure.
